2017 | Polyurethane Original + Digital Edit
After many spills, air bubbles, bad cures, and mis-measurements, I finally figured out how polyurethane wants to be worked with.
Once I was familiar with the properties of the material, I came up with a vision for a shallow mold that would allow me to create rectangular pieces of art once de-molded.
I would pour the polyurethane into my newly minted mold and through clamp wizardry quickly press a Pine backing down as they cured. The backing gave the pieces the structure they needed for being hung. From straight on they looked as I had expected - however the post processing proved to be tedious and gave them an edge finish I wasn’t happy with.
I tested many variations of backing process but ultimately decided my original vision for the project would be just as easily achieved through a series of prints from the polyurethane originals. They would look cleaner and would give me the ability to ship the work easier and for less cost.
I photographed the originals (see images below), brought them into Photoshop, and worked them further - the result are the prints you see to the left.
